For a long, long time, Android users have desired a certain option to be added to the mobile YouTube app – the ability to select the streaming quality of the videos they watch. Up until now, however, Android fans could only opt to watch a given video in either HD/HQ or not (provided that the video clip in question is a high-definition/high-quality one, that is). Fortunately, this is about to become a thing of the past, as the most recent update for YouTube adds the craved option to choose video quality.
Strangely enough, this option has been around on the iOS counterpart of YouTube for some time now. It was high time to implement it to the Android version of YouTube, Google!
This update will bring your YouTube app to version 5.7 and will enable you to stream at 144p, 240p, 360p, or 720p. It's not a typo, 1080p seems to be missing, but don't worry – there is an "Auto" option, which chooses the best possible quality based on your current Internet connection. Hopefully, this auto mode will enable YouTube to stream Full HD videos on your device. The streaming quality of the video playback can be adjusted from the Settings menu, which is in the upper right corner of the video you are watching.
As usual, the update will be rolling out in stages, so it may not hit your YouTube app right away. Oh, and by the way, we are still waiting for that nifty offline video playback that was promised back in November.
