Chen: BlackBerry ends restructuring period, moves on to growth

mardi 5 août 2014

A leaked internal memo sent from BlackBerry brass to its employees, says that the period of restructuring that the company faced, is now behind it. The memo, written by BlackBerry CEO John Chen, says that the three years of cutting head count at the manufacturer is over. Over the last three years, 60% of the company's workforce had been eliminated.

Thanking those who stayed at the manufacturer, Chen said that the company will start to add a modest number of new employees to product development, sales and customer service. The executive also said that BlackBerry is now able to make small, strategic acquisitions. Last week, it purchased encryption and security firm Secusmart, a deal that lifts BlackBerry's already sterling reputation when it comes to security in the enterprise.

By the end of this fiscal year, BlackBerry will be cash flow positive, according to Chen, who has done quite a bit in his first eight months at the helm of the company. The BlackBerry Z3 launched earlier this year, the first phone to roll off Foxconn's assembly line as part of a five year pact between the contract manufacturer and BlackBerry. In addition, Chen has opened up the BBM messaging platform to rival operating systems and has started monetizing the service.

Lastly, he has created a buzz around the company's new flagship model, the BlackBerry Passport. The phone features a unique contextually aware input system that combines typing on physical and virtual keys. He also restarted production of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 after noting how sales of legacy phones outsold BlackBerry 10 powered models in recent quarters. And with the BlackBerry Classic, he brings back a trackpad and function keys.

Chen is known as a turnaround artist, having successfully nursed Sybase to health, selling it to SAP for $5.8 billion in 2010.
