Experiment successful, Macy's to load up its stores with iBeacons

lundi 15 septembre 2014

Last November, Macy's started using Shopkick's service called ShopBeacon. This technology uses Apple's iBeacon to transmit special deals to iPhone wielding Macy's customers. The retailer has been so happy with the result of the experiment, that it is putting iBeacon units in every store. The technology uses Bluetooth LE to target certain shoppers in specific sections of the store, with deals based on customers' locations.

All you need to do is install the Shopkick app and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone. 4000 iBeacons will be installed throughout the Macy's chain in time for the holiday shopping season. At first, customers throughout each store will receive the same offers. But an upgrade expected in the spring will make the transmitted bargains appear, based on each customers' location in the store. Those walking in front of men's slacks will see deals on their handsets related to that department. Stand in front of the women's lingerie department and you'll receive coupons for those items.

Macy's and Bloomingdale's also announced that both will be amongst the first retailers to support Apple Pay. More information will be coming next month when the mobile payment system is set to launch.
