According to Bloomberg, HTC is preparing to introduce a smartphone camera accessory in the spirit of GoPro's rugged cameras and the Sony QX series of "smart lenses". It is said to be a waterproof 16-megapixel camera with a wide angle lens that connects to Android and iOS smartphones through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It is described as "tube-shaped", and it's going to be supported by HTC-made Android and iOS apps.
The camera could be unveiled at an October 8 event in New York, along with a new smartphone designed for taking selfies. HTC has already sent out invites for the event, titled "Double Exposure".
The publication notes that HTC is looking for new revenue sources as it forecasted its 12th straight quarter of diminishing sales. The company is looking to compete beyond smartphones with products such as mobile camera accessories and a smartwatch. Reportedly, the HTC timepiece won't be unveiled until next year.
