Sony gives you a step-by-step on how to unlock its phones' bootloaders

lundi 15 décembre 2014

Sony has been very active about keeping its devices open and MOD-friendly. The AOSP for Xperia project is a testament to this, but if anyone is still having doubts – we now also have an official FAQ and step-by-step guide on how to unlock the bootloader on Sony devices.

For those of you who haven't delved in the lands of custom ROMs yet – unlocking the bootloader is an action one must take, before the phone allows 3rd party ROMs to be installed on it. Most carrier-issued handsets have their bootloaders locked, which limits the amount of tinkering users can do with their phones.

Now, Sony didn't launch an app that automates or simplifies the process, mind you – it only posted a guide on how to do the unlocking in the old-fashioned way. Still, it's an official "endorsement" of the action, if you will, even though it warns you that unlocking the bootloader equals a void warranty, and a few potential risks (we've also heard that unlocking the bootloader may hamper camera performance).

Do you own an Xperia device? Are you OK with Sony's interface, or are you itching to try out a custom ROM?
