Brokerage firm says Pegatron will assemble more than 50% of next year's Apple iPhone 6s

jeudi 4 décembre 2014

With supply finally catching up with demand for the hugely popular Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus, you can be sure that Apple is not the type of company to be resting on its laurels. In fact, there is already some talk out of Taiwan, about Apple's production plans for 2015's Apple iPhone 6s. For the first time ever, contract manufacturer Pegatron is expected to produce more than half of the iPhone units shipped. Keep in mind that we are talking about the expected 4.7-inch iPhone 6s only.

Keep in mind that this forecast comes from a foreign brokerage firm's note to its clients. Both Pegatron and its main rival Hon Hai (Foxconn), are publicly traded overseas. Brokerage analysts tend to send out reports like this in order to get shares moving to generate buy and sell commissions from clients.

This year, Foxconn accounted for 70% of the production of the 4.7-inch Apple iPhone 6. All of the Apple iPhone 6 Plus units rolled off of Foxconn's assembly lines as well. Once Tim Cook took the reins of Apple in 2011, he ordered the company to start using more than just one contract manufacturer to lower the inherent risk of counting on just Foxconn for all iPhone production.

Pegatron's initial iPhone assignment came with the Apple iPhone 4s, and the company has slowly worked its way up the ladder to its current 30% share of iPhone 6 assembly. The research note from the unnamed brokerage firm adds that there is a slight chance that Pegatron wins the job for next year's Apple iPhone 6s Plus phablet.

As we said, this could merely be posturing by a commission house. Still, we can't count out the rising share of iPhone units that Apple is entrusting Pegatron to assemble each year.
