Android loophole can have your camera taking your picture and video without you knowing

dimanche 25 mai 2014

Former Google engineer Szymon Sidor has found a troubling loophole in Android. This loophole can allow a malicious app to take control of the cameras on your Android device without you knowing, and upload the images to an unknown server. The whole process would take place without your knowledge, making it even scarier.

The loophole was recreated by Sidor, which you can check out in the video at the bottom of the page. Since Google requires an on-screen preview for apps to take photos, you will see that none can be found on Sidor's phone. That is because Google does not have a minimum size requirement for the preview, which is actually being shown on one pixel! Since your phone has millions of pixels, you will never spot the one that is showing the preview. Google can close this by mandating that on-screen previews cover a certain percentage of the screen.

Sidor has passed along some tips so that you don't end up seeing an image of yourself doing something regrettable on TMZ. Until Google does send out a fix that closes the loophole, he suggests that you pay close attention to apps that ask for permission to use the camera. Use two-step verification and keep your Google account secure to guard against remote app installation. Find some apps you don't use or need? Chuck 'em. Remove suspicious apps using more battery and bandwidth than average. Remove suspicious apps using Background Services.

Just use your common sense.
