BlackBerry announced its newest handset, the BlackBerry Z3, in Indonesia. Previously known by its code-name Jakarta, the sub-$200 phone is already a success in the country, with three Indonesian carriers reporting that they have sold out their pre-order units. BlackBerry confirmed the phone is built exclusively for Indonesia and even comes with a special set of BBM Stickers that feature local characters "Punakawan". Indonesian customers will also be able to join local BBM Channels and get updates from their favorite brands, communities, and more.
The BlackBerry Z3 is an all-touch handset with a 5-inch 540x960 display, dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, 1.5GB RAM, 5MP rear camera and 1.1MP front camera, 8GB of storage and a generous 2500mAh battery. It runs BlackBerry OS 10.
For BlackBerry, the Z3 is a bit to recapture its formerly strong market presence in Indonesia. Two years ago, the Canadian company had a 40% market share in the country, but the percentage dwindled to just 4% after the launch of the BlackBerry Z10, which came across as too pricey for local customers. The Foxconn-built Z3 is priced affordably and offers a decent set of features. Hopefully, it will help BlackBerry get its handset business back on its feet.
