Samsung's takeover of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 was blown out of proportion

On Friday, we told you about Samsung's plan to takeover Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport for two weeks. According to the original story, starting on Monday, Terminal 5 is supposed to be transformed into one giant ad for the Samsung Galaxy S5 with changes made to all digital screens, and signs so that they all will be promoting Samsung's flagship phone. The terminal itself is to be renamed "Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5".



While it sounds like a fabulous way for the manufacturer to spread the word about the model, the truth is that Samsung's "takeover" of the terminal has been over-exaggerated. After the U.K. press complained about the promotion, and nervous travelers expressed fears about getting confused, the airport released a statement that called the whole thing a "tongue-in-cheek campaign using the line: 'Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5'." Heathrow said that Samsung had merely rented some space for a promotional campaign.




"Heathrow Terminal 5's signage and passenger wayfinding has not changed, Samsung have (sic) rented advertising space in Terminal 5 with a tongue-in-cheek campaign using the line: 'Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5'."-Heathrow Airport spokesman




To make it clear, Samsung is not taking over Terminal 5 at Heathrow, but is paying for advertising space that any other company could rent. The confusion took place because of Samsung's press release which said that Samsung was re-branding the terminal and would be taking over "the signage, wayfinding, website and every single digital screen at the UK's newest terminal to promote the launch of its iconic Galaxy S5 mobile."
