Sony unwraps the SmartBand Talk, a fitness band with call-making functions and an e-paper display

Sony's new lineup of Xperia devices is already here, folks, but that's not all that go unveiled at its IFA event. The manufacturer just revealed its SmartBand Talk wearable, which does not only keep tabs on your everyday physical activities, but also allows you to handle calls and control your smartphone with voice controls, courtesy of Sony's own Voice Control technology. The band itself is detachable from the core made of silicon and weighs just 26 grams.



Endowed with a 1.4” e-paper display, which has a resolution of 288x128 pixels, the Sony SmartBand Talk also flashes an ARM Cortex-M4 processor under its tiny hood, as well as 2MB of internal memory, and a 70mAh lithium-polymer battery, which might sound puny at first sight, but if we take the extreme power efficiency of the e-paper display in regard, then it should provide more than adequate battery life (up to 3 days, as per Sony's specifications. NFC and Bluetooth take care of connectivity, and the whole shebang is being protected by water, courtesy of an IP68 certification.

“We’re going beyond mere fitness tracking and number crunching, to help you log and preserve those emotional moments that matter,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. ”As a pioneer of smart and wearable technology, SmartBand Talk, SmartWatch 3 and Lifelog don’t merely affirm Sony’s leadership in the space, but as the innovators who dare to be different – bringing the world choice; products and services no else can, or will.”

The SmartBand Talk makes use of Sony's new Lifelog app for Android that allows you to “set and achieve goals, bookmark memorable moments, and revisit memories any time”. The API of the app will be openly available to third-party developers later this year. The wearable will fetch an EUR 159 price tag.
