The OG Motorola Moto G receives Android 4.4.4 |
Own the original version of the Motorola Moto G? The unlocked U.S. handset received Android 4.4.3 in June and that update added some of Motorola's new features at the time, along with parts of Android 4.4.4. Doing that cut the size of the phone's new OTA update to just 21MB, while keeping the changelist to a minimum.
According to Motorola, the OTA update will make the OG Moto G more stable. It also adds security fixes, including one to OpenSSL. The power profile will also be improved thanks to Android 4.4.4. The update will also allow those filming a video to pause at a specific spot, and later resume filming where they had left off. A pause/resume button will be found on the viewfinder following the downloading and installation of the update.
Other new features include an updated dialer that uses new colors and a fresh layout to make it easier to use. Lastly, the update allows owners of last year's Motorola Moto G to install the Motorola Alert app from the Google Play Store. With this app, certain contacts can be notified when someone with a supported handset (such as the Moto G) enters or leaves a certain area. Also, emergency services and certain contacts can be called with a mere tap in case of emergency.
Motorola suggests connecting to a Wi-Fi network while downloading and installing the update. Also, make sure that your batteries are chaged to at least 50%. Those in the U.K. toting the OG Moto G, already received the update in July.. Four months later, it comes around to the U.S. where the new version of the OS will be 210.12.40.
