Several months ago, Samsung announced the Gear S as its first smartwatch that can make calls by itself - since it has a SIM card slot and 3G connectivity. Starting today, the device is available to buy in the US. At the moment, only AT&T and Sprint are offering the Gear S, but the smartwatch will also be released by T-Mobile and Verizon.
AT&T is selling the Gear S for $199.99 with a 2-yr contract agreement, or $299 without any agreement. Sprint allows customers to get the smartwatch for $0 down plus 24 monthly payments of $16. While AT&T is offering the Gear S in both black and white, Sprint is selling only the black variant.
Unlike most of the recently-introduced smartwatches, the Gear S doesn’t run Android Wear, but Tizen. The display of the Gear S is a curved, 2-inch Super AMOLED one with 360 x 480 pixels. Other features include Wi-Fi, heart rate sensor, barometer, UV light sensor, compass, a dual-core 1 GHz Exynos processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal memory, and a 300 mAh battery. In case you don’t want to use it with a SIM card, the Gear S can also be connected to a Galaxy smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0.
