Lenovo says there is no U.S. demand for small Windows tablets

vendredi 18 juillet 2014

According to a report published on Friday, an email from Lenovo states that there is no demand in the U.S. for Windows tablets under 10 inches. As a result, the manufacturer will stop selling such items in the states. The Lenovo ThinkPad 8 and the 8.1 inch version of the Lenovo Miix2, are being removed from store shelves in the U.S. Remaining stock will be sent to countries like Brazil, China and Japan, where demand remains for such tablets.

While the smaller version of the Lenovo Miix is not being sold in the states, the 10.1 inch version will still be available. Bob O’Donnell, principal analyst at Technalysis Research, says that the manufacturer's actions are reasonable. Sharpening up his pencil, O'Donnell notes that smaller screened Android tablets are selling well, as opposed to Windows models. "It’s impossible for Windows devices to compete," said the analyst.

"In North America, we’re seeing stronger interest in the larger screen sizes for Windows tablets and are pleased with initial customer demand for the ThinkPad 10. In other markets, particularly Brazil, China, and Japan, the demand for ThinkPad 8 has been much stronger, so we are adjusting our ThinkPad 8 inventories to meet increasing demand in those markets. If market demand for ThinkPad 8 changes, we will re-evaluate our strategy."-Raymond Gorman, Lenovo spokesman

The move by Lenovo follows Microsoft's decision to cancel the launch of a Windows RT 8.1 powered Surface mini tablet, that was supposed to be released in May. There is speculation that the slate was 86'd by Microsoft, because the software giant felt that the 7.5 inch to 8 inch slate would not be a hit. Whatever Microsoft saw that made them cancel the Surface mini was also spotted by Lenovo.
