It's time for the monthly snapshot of the U.S. smartphone market courtesy of comScore. As usual, our first look is at the individual platforms where the Android OS remains on top. For the three months ended in September, Google's open source OS had 52.1% of the U.S. smartphone market. That is up from the 51.9% share that Android held for the three months ended in June. The lead over second place iOS is now 10.4 percentage points, up from the 9.8 percentage point lead that Android had for the June quarter. Apple's iOS lost .4pp during the three months ended in September, and now controls 42.1% of the U.S. market.
Microsoft's Windows Phone was third with a 3.6% slice of the U.S. smartphone pie, a small increase from the 3.4% that the platform owned for the quarter ended in June. BlackBerry was next, and suffered a tiny .1 percentage point drop for a 2.3% share. Symbian doubled its market share in the three months ended in September, winding up with .2% of the U.S. smartphone market.
The iPhone remained the top smartphone in the states, by market share. Apple, as previously noted, controlled 41.7% of the U.S. smartphone market for the three months ended in September. Samsung, with a .4 percentage point gain, was next with 29% That narrowed the distance betwen the two tech titans by .8pp to 12.7pp from 13.5pp. LG had a fine quarter, gaining half a percent point of market share for a 6.9% share in the states. That was followed by Motorola (5.4%) and HTC (4.4%). The pair had declines of .5 percentage points and .4 percentage points, respectively.
Facebook was the top app during the period, in terms of reach. The social networking app reached 72% of U.S. smartphone users in the quarter. That was followed by YouTube (51.5%), Google Play (51.1%), Google Search (47.3%) and Pandora (45%).
