AnTuTu – one of the most popular mobile benchmark providers – has released its official top 10 list for this year's 3rd quarter, and at the top of the list, surprisingly to many, stands none other but China-based manufacturer Meizu's MX4 flagship smartphone.
Now, we've seen the MTK6595-powered handset hit a top-score on AnTuTu twice before (1, 2), but that was well before the latest round of flagships – such as the Galaxy Note 4 and Xperia Z3 – hit the market. Back then, we were uncertain, whether the MX4 would be able to hold its crown, once the new handsets arrive, but it seems that it was able to do so – granted, it's only 170 points ahead of the Note 4, it still is ahead.
The statistic was compiled with results submitted from 160 different countries, while with models that have different CPUs for different regions, AnTuTu only took under account the model with the better-performing processor, and discarded the other one. At the end, the MX4 came out on top, with an average of 48,792 points, followed closely by the Galaxy Note 4 with 48,622, and the Galaxy Alpha with 48,385.
The top 10 is still predominated by Qualcomm Snapdragon-equipped smartphones, but it's interesting to see that the first 3 spots of the list have three different SoCs – the MediaTek MTK6595 in the MX4, Samsung's home-brewed Exynos Octa 7 in the Note 4 (which means that the Exynos Octa 7 performed better than the Snapdragon 805), and the Snapdragon 801 in the Galaxy Alpha . This goes to show that Qualcomm is no longer the player to beat in the CPU solutions market, and it would be interesting to see if it manages to reclaim its throne with the upcoming octa-core, 64-bit Snapdragon 810.
So, the Meizu MX4 was released this September and is already gaining popularity. It offers a 5.4" screen with the rather unorthodox 1152 x 1920 resolution (418 PPI) and provides a great handling experience, with an impressive 75.52% screen-to-body ratio, resulting in slim, easy to grasp, bezels. Aside from the aforementioned MTK6595, it has 2 GB of RAM, a choice between 16 and 32 GB of storage, a 20.7 MP Sony CMOS IMX 220 main camera sensor, a 2 MP front snapper, and a 3,100 mAh battery, which proved to be quite adequate in our battery life test. Meizu offers the handset at a $449 price point for customers outside of China, shipping and taxes (in certain markets) included, which is a pretty alluring offer.
Have you managed to get your hands on a Meizu MX4? If not – do you crave one?
