Xiaomi Mi 2 running stock Android 5.0 Lollipop shows up on photos

vendredi 7 novembre 2014

Well, Android 5.0 Lollipop is here, currently only on the Nexus 9, and while manufacturers are racing to update their most relevant devices to the new OS, modders and tinkerers are sure to start looking for more interesting handsets to port Google's new OS to.

A Weibo user posted what appears to be a Xiaomi Mi 2 running vanilla Android 5.0 Lollipop. There isn't much info given about what we are supposed to be looking at, though. The phone seems to have no signal and there isn't a single picture showing it with Wi-Fi on, so this is probably not a functional version and is probably a clean AOSP version of the OS. After all, Google did post Lollipop's source code a few days ago.

Anyway, the bigger deal for owners of the rather old Mi 2 handsets is that the phone may be able to accomodate Android 5.0 custom ROMs, as long as someone is willing to develop one for it. The phone was released back in 2012 and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (with Xiaomi's proprietary MIUI on top). Powered by a 1.5 GHz Quad-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, an Adreno 320 GPU, and sporting a 720p resolution on its 4.3” screen – it still sounds like a serious midranger, so hey – if you can install and run Lollipop on it effortlessly – there's no shame in rocking a Mi 2.
